# What is the purpose of creating an assignment?

The purpose of creating an assignment is to...

**Organize Submissions**  
* Centralize student essays or submissions for easier access and management  
* Help track individual student progress and performance across assignments

**Customize Instructions**  
* Allow educators to set instructions tailored to the assignment's objectives  
* Ensure consistent evaluation for all students based on predefined rubric metrics

**Add Source Material**  
* Attach source files or reference texts that students will use to complete the assignment.  
* The AI can analyze the content and evaluate student responses more accurately, ensuring a more detailed and context-aware grading process.  
* Helps maintain consistency in grading by assessing how well students incorporate and engage with the provided material.

To upload the source material you can either:  
* Select **Enter text**, copy and paste the text into the box, and fill out the **Source Name**.

* Choose the default setting **Select files** and either drop the file in the box, browse and import the file from My Device, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, or take a photo of the text by selecting on the corresponding icon. Note, the supported file types are .txt, .docx, and .pdf.
